    Sich selbst anders erfinden: Fremdblicke auf das Gymnasium Philosophicum

    Im Vortrag wird der Gedanken entfaltet, dass neben anderen Herangehensweisen auch die imaginative eine wichtige Rolle im Philosophieunterricht spielen kann. Die Fähigkeit zu imaginieren wäre somit Bestandteil der philosophischen Bildung und könnte zu einer „vertieften Gesellschaftsreife“ beitragen. Dies erfordert eine weitere Reflexion in Hinblick auf eine philosophische-didaktische Erarbeitung. Genauer wird es in einer Reise durch ältere philosophiedidaktische Diskussionen des Gymnasium Helveticum veranschaulicht, indem einige Fragen nach dem Charakter philosophischer Bildung im Hinblick auf aktuelle Herausforderungen reflektiert werden. Drei Fragen, die nicht gesondert diskutiert werden leiten diese Erkundung und thematisieren die Stellung der Philosophie als Fach: Liefert uns die Philosophie zusätzliche Notionen? Kann Philosophie durch andere Fächer ersetzt werden? Wozu philosophische Bildung? Auf diese Weise wird versucht, zu denken, wie wir Transformationen entstehen lassen können und wie das transformative Potential des „Fremdblickens“, zusammen mit anderen imaginativen Fähigkeiten, einen kritischen Aspekt der philosophischen Bildung begreifbar machen und ein Schlüssel für die Begegnung mit dem Unerwarteten werden könnten, wo Philosophie unterrichtet wird

    Analysis of Voltage Distribution and Connections within a High-Frequency Hairpin Winding Model

    In the last years the adoption of hairpin windings is increasing, especially in the automotive sector, mainly due to their inherently high fill factor and electric loading capability. A critical aspect related to the reliability and lifetime of every winding typology is the voltage stress due to the uneven voltage distribution. This phenomenon has already been largely analyzed in conventional stranded conductors, while a few studies are available for hairpin windings. With the spreading of wide bandgap devices, the investigation on voltage distribution becomes an ever-timely topic due to their short rise times. This paper presents an analysis of the uneven voltage distribution triggered within hairpin windings by a low rise time waveform, using a complete high-frequency winding model. The different options to series-connect different paths are investigated, providing simple but essential guidelines to reduce the electrical stress within hairpin windings. © 20XX IEEE.     This work provides a groundwater flow and transport model of trichlorethylene and tetrachlorethylene contamination in the Cecina's coastal aquifer. The contamination analysis, with source located in the Poggio Gagliardo area (Montescudaio, Pisa), was necessary to optimize the groundwater monitoring and remediation design. The work was carried out in two phases: • design of a conceptual model of the aquifer using GIS analysis of many stratigraphic, chemical and hydrogeological data, collected from 2004 to 2012 in six aqueduct wells; • implementation of a groundwater flow and transport numerical model using the MODFLOW 88/96 and MT3D code and the graphical user interface GroundWaterVistas 5. The conceptual model hypothesizes a multilayer aquifer in the coastal plain extended to the sandy-clay hills, recharged by rainfall and by the Cecina River. The aquifer shows important hydrodynamic features affecting both the contamination spreading, due to the presence of a perched and heavily polluted layer separate from the underlying productive aquifer, and the hydrological balance, due to a thick separation layer that limits exchanges between the river and the second groundwater aquifer. The numerical model, built using increasingly complex versions of the initial conceptual model, has been calibrated using monitoring surveys conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency of Regione Toscana (ARPAT), in order to obtain possible forecast scenarios based on the minimum and maximum flow periods, and it is currently used as a tool for decision support regarding the reclamation and/or protection of the aquifer. Future developments will regard the implementation of the multilayer transport model, based on a new survey, and the final coupling with the regional hydrological model named MOBIDIC

    Predicting Fishing Footprint of Trawlers From Environmental and Fleet Data: An Application of Artificial Neural Networks

    The increasing use of tracking devices, such as the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and the Automatic Identification System (AIS), have allowed, in the last decade, detailed spatial and temporal analyses of fishing footprints and of their effects on environments and resources. Nevertheless, tracking devices usually allow monitoring of the largest length classes composing different fleets, whereas fishing vessels below a regulatory threshold (i.e., 15 m in length-over-all) are not mandatorily equipped with these tools. This issue is critical, since 36% of the vessels in the European Union (EU) fleets belong to these “hidden” length classes. In this study, a model [namely, a cascaded multilayer perceptron network (CMPN)] is devised to predict the annual fishing footprints of vessels without tracking devices. This model uses information about fleet structures, environmental characteristics, human activities, and fishing effort patterns of vessels equipped with tracking devices. Furthermore, the model is able to take into account the interactions between different components of the fleets (e.g., fleet segments), which are characterized by different operating ranges and compete for the same marine space. The model shows good predictive performance and allows the extension of spatial analyses of fishing footprints to the relevant, although still unexplored, fleet segments

    NIR Spectroscopy of Luminous Infrared Galaxies and the Hydrogen Recombination Photon Deficit

    We report on near-infrared medium-resolution spectroscopy of a sample of luminous and ultra luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs-ULIRGs), carried out with SOFI at the ESO 3.5m New Technology Telescope. Because of wavelength dependence of the attenuation, the detection of the Pa_alfa or Br_gamma line in the Ks band should provide relevant constraints on SFR and the contribution of an AGN. We find, however, that the intensities of the Pa_alfa and Br_gamma lines, even corrected for slit losses, are on average only 10% and 40%, respectively, of that expected from a normal starburst of similar bolometric luminosity. The corresponding star formation rates, after correcting for the attenuation derived from the NIR-optical emission line ratios, are 14% and 60% of that expected if the far infrared luminosity were entirely powered by the starburst. This confirms the existence of a recombination photon deficit, particularly in the case of the Pa_alfa line, already found in the Br_gamma line in other infrared galaxies of similar luminosity. In discussing the possible causes of the discrepancy, we find unlikely that it is due to the presence of an AGN, though two objects show evidence of broadening of the Pa_alfa line and of the presence of coronal line emission. In fact, from our own observations and data collected from the literature we argue that the studied galaxies appear to be predominantly powered by a nuclear starburst. Two scenarios compatible with the present data are that either there exists a highly attenuated nuclear star forming region, and/or that a significant fraction of the ionizing photons are absorbed by dust within the HII regions.     Extra-ocular muscle cells from patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy secrete α (CXCL10) and β (CCL2) chemokines under the influence of cytokines that are modulated by PPARγ

    To our knowledge, no study has evaluated the involvement of T helper (Th)1- and Th2-chemokines in extra-ocular muscle (EOM) myopathy in "patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy" (TAO-p). We tested the effects of interferon (IFN)γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)α stimulation, and of increasing concentrations of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ agonists (pioglitazone or rosiglitazone; 0.1μM-20μM), on Th1-chemokine [C-X-C motif ligand (CXCL)10] and Th2-chemokine [C-C motif ligand (CCL)2] secretion in primary EOM cultures from TAO-p vs. control myoblasts. Moreover, we evaluated serum CXCL10 and CCL2 in active TAO-p with prevalent EOM involvement (EOM-p) vs. those with prevalent orbital fat expansion (OF-p). Serum CXCL10 was higher in OF-p and EOM-p vs. controls, while serum CCL2 was not significantly different in controls, or in OF-p and EOM-p. We showed the expression of PPARγ in EOM cells. In primary EOM cultures from TAO-p: a) CXCL10 was undetectable in the supernatant, IFNγ dose-dependently induced it, whereas TNFα did not; b) EOM produced basally low amounts of CCL2, TNFα dose-dependently induced it, whereas IFNγ did not; c) the combination of TNFα and IFNγ had a significant synergistic effect on CXCL10 and CCL2 secretion; and d) PPARγ agonists have an inhibitory role on the modulation of CXCL10, while they stimulate CCL2 secretion. EOM participates in the self-perpetuation of inflammation by releasing both Th1 (CXCL10) and Th2 (CCL2) chemokines under the influence of cytokines, in TAO. PPARγ agonist activation plays an inhibitory role on CXCL10, but stimulates the release of CCL2
